Texas Health and Human Services Department has announced that all public health workers will have to wear face masks during their time in the office, including the entire time they’re on duty.
The move is a huge blow to the state’s already struggling healthcare system.
The state currently has fewer than 30,000 public health staffers, and it has had to spend more than $500 million in cuts over the past two years, according to a recent analysis by the Texas Tribune.
The state has been grappling with an influx of newly diagnosed cases, including many from Ebola, and a rise in hospitalizations.
As a result, Texas has been struggling with its own record-breaking outbreak, and there has been a huge uptick in hospital admissions and deaths.
